mise en abyme
curious curves garnish each blade
within, worlds upon words flourish
vast like a cluttered desk - yet
like the mess, confined to a small space
if, perchance a stray leaf slipped
destined to be forgotten in the dust
what is the fate that awaits the quester?
history eats itself and spits out –
(it consumes you as fast as you devour it
an otherworldly maw constantly chewing
“i loved that book, i adored it. (i will remember it always)”
a burr to memory – will it drop?)
words. is the story any changed?
cobble the missing link back together again
a bit of glue, some tape, a Xerox copy
it is not the same. it cannot be the same.
20070211. inspired partly by 2 books - cornelia funke's inkheart (which i have finished recently), and jostein gaarder's sophie's world (which i consider to be the best use of the 'story within a story' device). the title is french for this well-known literary device. ~ m!
